A Secret Treasure and an Excellent Vacation Getaway
Author: tnate
If you are looking for a charming area to have an exciting winter vacation or a summer departure from the heat, don't look past
Angel Fire, NM. The Angel Fire Resort is tucked away in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains which are part of the southern Rockies and the village is located at an elevation of 8,250 feet. The top of the resort is as high as 10,677 ft and the neighboring Wheeler Peak (the tallest mountain in New Mexico) goes up to 13,161 feet.
The winter in Angel Fire is crisp, snow covered and offers some of the finest skiing and snowboarding in New Mexico. The resort now contains 74 trails where you will discover a vast variety of beginner, intermediate, and hard runs. If you are just learning, this makes it very easy for you to encounter a number of runs which are flatter to help you learn. If you are more of a veteran skier, the resort also contains 30 acres of glade tree skiing, which I can tell you from actual experience, is pretty thrilling. Are you even more exploratory than that? Take a little walk up the mountain to try some of the expert runs on the back of the resort for a real challenge. This recent winter in Angel Fire I snowboarded some of the finest powder I've seen. The winter activities have been extended over the years to also include cross country skiing, tubing (which is great for the youngsters), snowmobiling, snowshoeing, snowskating, snowbiking, sleigh rides, and even ice-fishing on Eagle Nest Lake.
The summers in Angel Fire are just as enticing. Air conditioning is not essential here! The summers are delectably cool which make it an ideal retreat from numerous hotter climates. The area is also full of numerous outdoor activities including hiking, cycling, golf, tennis, mountain biking, horseback riding, ATV-riding, rafting, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and fly-fishing. Angel Fire features an 18-hole PGA championship golf course which is one of the top ranked high-elevation courses. The country club was recently redesigned and it is rather spectacular. Angel Fire also hosts the nation's second largest mountain bike festival, the Chile Challenge, each summer. Mountain bikers can be certain the trails will challenge them. However, if you simply want to sit back and relax, you can take in the clean mountain air and enjoy the splendor of the aspens.
The real magnificence of Angel Fire lies in its peacefulness. Seeing that Angel Fire remains for the most part underdeveloped it is considered by many people to be New Mexico's secret treasure. The village has a population of roughly 1,200 inhabitants and in its 39 square miles there are not many bars, no casinos, and not even a single street light. The absence of crowds means you can come to Angel Fire and leave your stress at home and actually feel in harmony with the outdoors. You can look forward to to be enchanted by the regular wildlife sightings. As a house owner in Angel Fire, I can tell you it is pretty normal to encounter elk or a deer on the way up to my house or wake up at sunrise and have them standing in my lot. Tales of sightings of bighorn sheep, marmots, or even a mountain lion or bear are not uncommon at all either. If you are bird watcher, New Mexico is residence to more native| species of birds than any other state. Angel Fire's undamaged land makes it just the right place to see lots of of them. Being from an urban area, I am still surprised when I come to Angel Fire and I can make out every star in the sky.
Just the right temperatures. Unpolluted mountain air. No crowds. Friendly atmosphere. Well-preserved nature. Many activities. Angel Fire, NM is the place to be.
