Driving Map

The California National Historic Trail stretches from Missouri and Iowa, west to California and Oregon, through Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho and Nebraska.  Vacations National Park will highlight the trail in each state with in our website.
No specific parks are listed on the Internet for the California National Historic Trail within Oregon so we had to do some digging for our visitors.  Starting with the route:

1. Starting out in Tulelake, California take State Route 39 north to State Route 66 in Merrill, Oregon, which is at the city of Klamath Falls.
2. Turn west onto State Route 66 at Klamath Falls.
3. Take State Route 66 west to Interstate 5.
4. Turn onto I-5 north at Ashland.
5. Take I-5 north to State Route 99 north at Eugene.
6. State Route 99 becomes State Route 99W.
7. Turn west onto Clow Corner Rd. and follow to Dallas and the trail's end.

Starting with Klamath Falls as the first point of interest, which offers Crater Lake National Park, Lava Beds National Monuments, Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuges and National forests.  This area of the drive is as scenic as the entire route and is well known for the Scenic Byway routes that crisscrosses the Upper Klamath Basin.  Crater Lake National Park  and Lava Beds National Monument (California) will be highlighted within another section on this specific page, since they are national parks.  Six national wildlife refuges are all within a one hour drive of Klamath Falls.  They include the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Clear Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Upper Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, Bear Valley National Wildlife Refugre and Klamath Marsh National Wildlife Refuge.  Detailed information is available at the FWS.Gov website.  As with the National Parks in this area, the Fremont-Winema National Forests will be highlighted separately within our Oregon National Park section.  Fishing is abundant in this area and offers many species of fish, which include Rainbow Trout, Hybrid Bass, Large Mouth Bass, Yellow Perch, Black Crappie, Brown Bullhead and Brook Trout.  So many rivers and lakes to fish from it is a fisherman's haven.  More information for fishing in this area of Oregon is available at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.  Also available for fun is hiking, boating and Cycling.  Visit our Oregon restaurant page for restaurants specific to Klamath Falls and if you with to stay, we offer a direct link to hotels in Klamath Falls.  Downtown Klamath offers shops, restaurants, theaters, and a beautiful walk through its historic district.
Next, on to Ashland, via Route 66, Ashland is worth a stop with a special mention of North Mountain Park Nature Center.  The center offers indoor exhibits, and the Demonstration Gardens that include the: Butterfly Garden, Reptile and Amphibian Garden, herb Garden, Heirloom Garden, Native Plant Garden and the Bird Buffet Garden.  Events include the Bear Creek Festival in October, which is free and offers American Drumming, stories, exhibits, interactive art projects and live entertainment.  Ashland is home of the well known state Shakespeare Festival.  Although Ashland is a small town, the scenery, events, shopping and especially the restaurants are worth a stop.  If you plan to dine or stay over night, visit our restaurant and hotel pages.  Ashland is well known for its gourmet chefs.
Moving up the road to Eugene, which is a larger town with a very cultural downtown area that include arts, restaurants and shops plus is located near the Wilamette and Mckenzie Rivers.  River fishing tours are available and the rivers offer much recreational choices for a day of fun.  Eugene cultural centers is the 5th Market Street, which offers shops, restaurants, local musicians and the Artisan Gallery Room.  Also worth visiting is the Farmer's Market and the Lane Event Center who is the host for the 2010 Lane Fair from Aug. 18 through the 22.
The scenic drive plus so much to do along the Oregon section of the California Historic Trail, it all comes to an end in Dallas Oregon.  This fun filled, eventful and thrilling 1000 mile trail will be expanded within each state of VacationsNationalPark.Com.  More detailed information is available and the NPS.Gov website.

The photo above is from the National Park public domain and does not quite show the awe of Crater Lake.  Crater Lake is known to have the bluest water on Earth and is the deepest lake.  Timing though is of the essence unless planning a ski vacation for the winters are long and hard.  Snow can carry on up into July.  Many of the roads are closed until summer time.  The beauty of the lake and surround area is breath taking and is one of the National Park wonders that must be see.
Crater Lake is a scenic tour offering camping, hiking, biking or just a drive around the Rim is just as fun.  Two campgrounds, Mazama Campground (200 sites, running water, toilets, picnic tables and fire rings) and Lost Creek Campground (16 tent sites).  Lost Creek is open only for a small window each year due to the winters.  No specific information could be found regarding hunting, fishing boating but, we are looking into that now.  For current fishing, boating and hunting information within the Crater Lake area please visit the above section on the California National Historic Trail.
